How to plant a bare-root hedge in Canterbury.
Bare-root hedging plants are lifted from the nursery field while dormant, sold without a pot, and typically cost around a third of the equivalent container-grown stock. They establish faster, produce a more open root system, and arrive in better condition than plants that have been sitting in polypots since spring. The catch is the window. Miss it, and you are buying a more expensive product and waiting another year. Here is what that window looks like for CT1 to CT4 gardens, and what to do with the soil before the plants arrive.
Quick checklist: before you plant
- November to late February: this is the bare-root season. Plan to be in the ground before the end of February.
- Locate the nursery soil-mark on every whip. That dark tide-mark is your planting depth: no deeper, no shallower.
- Dig the trench at least 30cm wide and 25cm deep. On chalk, break up the compacted pan at the bottom.
- Work organic matter into the backfill, not into the trench base. Compost at the base causes settlement.
- Add mycorrhizal inoculant (Rootgrow) to the root system immediately before placing the plant.
- Space 30-45cm apart for formal evergreens; stagger a double row 45cm apart for a native mixed hedge.
- Cut hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel and field maple back by a third on planting day. Leave yew and hornbeam alone.
- Water in thoroughly, then mulch 75mm deep. Keep the mulch off the stem collar.
Why bare-root beats pot-grown for Canterbury hedges
A bare-root plant has spent its entire nursery life in open ground. The root system is wide, uncoiled, and already conditioned to seeking through soil. A container plant has been growing in a limited pot volume for months, sometimes years, and the roots have adapted accordingly. Bare-root whips planted into good ground establish more quickly in their first season, and they do not carry the root-circling problem that shows up in pot-grown stock five or six years down the line.
The Royal Horticultural Society's Alex Hankey, Trials Team Leader at RHS Garden Wisley, makes exactly this case in their Grow at Home series on YouTube: bare-root is the recommended choice wherever the planting window allows. For the standard native hedgerow mix that most people in the Blean fringe villages are now asking for (hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, hazel, dog rose), bare-root is also the only practical option for any length over about 20 metres, because the volume of pot-grown stock needed would be impractical and expensive.
The planting window in Canterbury
The bare-root season runs from roughly late October to late March nationally. In practice, for Canterbury, I regard November to late February as the honest working window, and I would push clients to aim for January if they can. Here is why late February matters specifically.
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 1, it is a criminal offence to damage or destroy an active bird's nest. The offence carries an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison per nest disturbed. The nesting season closure runs from 1 March to 31 August, and while it applies most obviously to cutting and trimming work on established hedges, it is relevant to hedge planting too. Ground preparation at a site near an existing hedge or shrub boundary from March onwards risks flushing early-nesting species: dunnock, wren, and blackbird are building from mid-to-late February in a mild Kent spring. "I didn't know they'd started" is not a defence. I finish all bare-root planting by the last week of February as a standing rule. Canterbury's two soils: chalk and Stour valley loam
Canterbury is not a single soil type, and the difference matters when you are putting in a hedge that is supposed to last fifty years. Our guide to species for chalk and loam covers the soil split in detail, but the short version is relevant here. The city, the downland villages south towards Petham, Adisham and Barham, and the higher ground through Hales Place and Wincheap all sit on the Seaford Chalk Formation: thin, alkaline (pH 7.5 to 8.5), fast-draining, and inclined to set rock-hard in a dry July. The Stour valley floor through Sturry Road, St Dunstan's, Northgate and out towards Sturry and Littlebourne is deeper loam over brickearth, more neutral, and wetter through winter.
On chalk: dig down 30cm and you will usually hit compacted chalk pan or flint bands. Break it up with a fork before you plant. The pan does not need to come out, but an intact chalk layer acts as a drainage barrier that waterloggs the root zone in January and dries it solid by July. Two minutes with a fork driven into the trench base makes a real difference to first-year survival. Yew, hornbeam, holly and thuja all tolerate chalk well once established; getting them through their first summer on thin topsoil requires this preparation. On valley loam, the concern is winter waterlogging rather than summer drought. Yew in particular is intolerant of standing water at the root. Planting 5-10cm proud of the surrounding soil level helps.
Trench, depth and spacing
The trench should be at least 30cm wide and 25cm deep. Wider is better if the root system is spreading rather than fibrous: never bend or fold roots to fit a narrower trench, as kinked roots establish poorly and are prone to snapping in the first growing season.
Planting depth is set by the nursery soil-mark on each plant. Every bare-root whip carries a visible change in tissue colour just above the root system: lighter root tissue below, darker stem tissue above. That line is exactly where the plant was growing in the nursery field. Plant to that mark. No deeper: burying the root collar promotes collar rot, and hornbeam and yew in particular will yellow and stall if planted with soil compacted over the collar. No shallower: exposed roots drying out in the first weeks of spring are the leading cause of first-year losses on Canterbury chalk, where the topsoil heats quickly.
Spacing for a formal single-species evergreen hedge (yew, hornbeam, laurel, thuja): 30-45cm between plants in a single row. For a native mixed hedgerow, the standard approach is a staggered double row with 45cm between the rows and 90cm between plants within each row. This gives a much thicker root structure than a single row and produces the characteristic depth and irregularity of a proper farm-style hedgerow. For boundaries in Tyler Hill, Blean village or Rough Common, where a native hedgerow is the right answer both ecologically and visually, the double staggered row is worth the extra plant cost.
Mycorrhizal inoculant and what not to put in the trench
Dust mycorrhizal powder (Rootgrow is the most widely available brand) over the root system immediately before placing the plant in the hole or trench. Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic network around the roots that significantly extends their effective reach for water and nutrients. The benefit is greatest in the first year, before the roots have grown into the surrounding soil. On Canterbury chalk, where topsoil is thin and the plant cannot easily access depth until it is established, this first-year benefit is real. It will not compensate for a badly prepared site, but it consistently improves survival rates on difficult ground.
What not to put in the trench base: organic matter. This is explicit RHS guidance, and it is consistently ignored. Compost or manure at the trench base decomposes and creates air pockets, causing the plant to sink below its planting depth in the first winter. Work organic matter into the backfill as you replace the soil. That is where the roots will reach in years two and three, and that is where improved soil structure makes a lasting difference.
The cut-back question
Cut hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), hazel (Corylus avellana) and field maple (Acer campestre) back by a third on planting day. This feels counterintuitive. You have just planted something you want to grow, and the instruction is to remove a third of it. The logic is straightforward: the root system has been disturbed and reduced by lifting from the nursery. The top growth creates a water demand that the reduced root system cannot yet meet. Cutting back balances top and root, forces branching low on the stem (exactly what you want in a dense hedge), and produces a bushier plant in year one than an uncut whip would give you.
Yew (Taxus baccata) and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus): leave them alone on planting day. Yew grows slowly and every leader matters. Hornbeam recovers from cutting but gains nothing from it in the first winter. Cut in the second or third year once the plant is settled and actively growing.
First-year care: the August problem
Water in thoroughly on planting day, even in wet winter weather. Then water at least weekly through May and June, and twice weekly through any dry spell in July and August. Canterbury chalk is the issue. The topsoil is shallow, heats quickly, and holds little moisture. A bare-root plant in its first summer does not yet have the root depth to tap the water table. I have seen healthy-looking June hedges in Hales Place and along the Old Dover Road go into sudden collapse in a mid-July dry stretch. A 75mm mulch ring (chipped bark or wood chip) across the full planted area holds moisture, suppresses competition from grass and weeds, and keeps the root zone cooler. Keep the mulch away from the stem collar: a mulch mound piled against the bark promotes collar rot and undoes the work of getting the planting depth right.

Hazel dormice are a European Protected Species and the Blean network supports a genuine population. Newly planted hedges carry no established dormouse risk, but clearance work near existing boundary hedges before planting does.
